I scream for Keilan’s Creamery

I love ice cream. I absolutely love it, but since I was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2010, my ice cream options have been limited. All it takes is one tub of cookies and cream ice cream to contaminate a whole ice cream shop for me. I’ve had people say they can clean the scoop for me, but for me, unless they open up a new container and sanitize the scoop – the damage has already been done. The scoop-cone connection is another risk of contamination. Most often I resort to buying a pint of gluten free ice cream and eating it at home, or I try to satisfy my urge with some soft serve, but it’s not the same. Back in May I was at a street party on 104th street when I spotted Keilan’s Creamery, a truck that was dishing up some pretty delicious looking ice creams on big waffle cones. I walked up to the window to see choices and saw an * saying they had gluten free options. There was a line so …

Pitstop in Torrington, Alberta? Gopher it!

For years, when I spotted the Torrington Gopher Hole Museum sign as I drove between Edmonton and Calgary on the QE2, I always wondered the same thing. Who would want to go to a gopher hole museum? Eventually, someone let me in on the fact that the museum wasn’t exactly about gopher holes. Unfortunately, I could never find the right time to go, or find a willing party on the drive back from Calgary to make the 30 km side trip. But ever since I started dating a foreigner, I’ve started to become a tourist in my own province. I often find myself checking out the Travel Alberta website. I was planning back in May when The Spaniard went to Drumheller, but the museum is only open from June 1 – September 30. Well, I am proud to say, I finally made it. …

Ladies on the Green

Shall we golf?

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the second annual Ladies on the Green Golf Classic at Victoria Golf Course in Edmonton’s river valley. Started by eight local ladies who love the idea of a charity golf tournament, but who don’t love the game, the day combines women who like golf with those who may not into a stylish afternoon packed with some golf, lots of socializing, tasty nibbles, and of course champagne. The fun is all in support of a very important cause; Edmonton’s Zebra Child Protection Centre, which is a community of agencies, helps to improve the lives of children impacted by abuse. The day offers up two options: play a round of 9-hole golf followed by dinner and festivities, or join later in the day for cocktails, a 1-hour group lesson with a golf pro, which finishes up in time for dinner and the festivities. I managed to win tickets for the latter option through Where Edmonton Magazine, and my friend Michelle was more than happy to join me with my silly stylish antics. The …
