Recap: Long Table Dinner at the Fairmont Macdonald

On Tuesday, August 20, 2019, The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald hosted their annual long-table dinner. This year, the hotel reduced the price to just $69 for a four-course menu which included a glass of wine from their signature collection (enjoyed on the patio with arguably the best view in Edmonton). I wasn’t the only one who thought $69 for a multi-course dinner at the Harvest Room at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald was a good deal. In response to the demand, The Mac oversold to accommodate 160 people  who were set up across two long tables in the Empire Ballroom. A wonderful thing about the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald is their ability to accommodate just about any allergy and food intolerance you throw at them. In addition to my gluten free needs, our friends also required a lactose free dinner – no problem for Chef Mridul and his culinary team, who served up a lovely summer-inspired menu. Recap: Taste Alberta Prairie on the Plate at the Harvest Room

Chef Mridul Bhatt, the executive chef at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald, has lived in Alberta for just over one year, but already has a knowledge and deep appreciation for ingredients grown, raised and produced from across the province. On Friday night, Chef Mridul and his culinary team presented a six-course menu Prairie on the Plate menu highlighting ingredients from Taste Alberta‘s commodity partners: Alberta Canola Producers, Egg Farmers of Alberta, Alberta Milk, Alberta Pulse Growers Commission, and Alberta Pork. After welcoming us to the Taste Alberta dinner, Chef Mridul shared his passion for using local ingredients and introduced our upcoming dishes. Our first course – ‘Rebel Within’, was a 63 degree Alberta egg, was nestled inside an applewood cheddar & jalapeño muffin and served alongside a chorizo tomato sauce. Taste Alberta’s Prairie on a Plate at The Harvest Room

Last week, chef Serge Jost hosted Taste Alberta‘s second Prairie on a Plate dinner in The Harvest Room at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald. For the event, Chef Jost created a four-course meal highlighting the best of what is produced, raised, and grown by Alberta farmers, including Brix ‘N Berries, Sunworks Farm, Highwood Crossing, Signature mushrooms, Mountainview Farming, and loads Alberta-grown pulses. First up was the an Alberta “Power Grain” & chorizo Aranccini. The amuse bouche – a treat from the kitchen – was a delightful start to the evening. The first course for the evening was a beef consommé poured over a boar bacon and white bean ravioli & yellow pea and vegetable succotash. While this gluten-free girl couldn’t take advantage of the ravioli, Chef Jost and his team made a gluten-free version of the dish for me to enjoy. I just love when soups are poured table side. A Birthday Dinner at The Harvest Room

I think The Harvest Room at Fairmont Hotel MacDonald is one of the most underrated restaurants in Edmonton. I often get asked what my favourite restaurant in the city is, and while I prefer to answer I have chefs I favour, over the restaurant itself, there is a special place in my heart (and my belly) for the Harvest Room. Also, Chef Serge Jost is a passionate Frenchman who brings an instant smile to my face every time I see him – he makes me want to dine at the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald. My first visit was just a year ago when I took The Spaniard there for his birthday. The meal was so memorable that I wanted to make it a tradition. The Harvest Room is not on the top ten hipster list in Edmonton; there is no bearded bartender mixing herbs with bitters at the bar and there is no app to tell you when your table is available.
