Fairmont JPL Celebrates 100 Years

On Thursday I had the pleasure of spending my lunch hour on the patio at the beautiful Fairmont Hotel MacDonald for a media launch celebrating 100 years of the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. This year, the hotel is celebrating 100 years of luxury hospitality on the shores of Lac Beauvert. To honour this anniversary, the historic lodge has launched a series of centennial events and activities planned throughout the year, including outdoor summer concerts (featuring The Sheepdogs and Platinum Blonde), lakeside dining events, historic tours and traditional high-tea tastings. I also learned that the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge has converted one of the restaurants into a new northern Italian restaurant ORSO Trattoria. Sous Chef Andrew Whiteside of the Fairmont JPL was on hand serving up a selection of their handmade pasta. While I couldn’t partake in the samples of fresh ravioli, he did walk me through the menu and assured me there were a lot of gluten free options. The help kick off the celebration – the hotel is asking social media users to share …

Dinosaur Trail

Dating a foreigner has inspired me to become a tourist in my own province. Originally I was hoping to get out of Alberta for the Victoria Day weekend in May, but with flight prices a little too high for my taste, I decided to look at travel options in Alberta. So I took a peek at the Travel Alberta website and decided on trying some of the Canadian Badlands scenic route. I hadn’t been to the land of dinosaurs since I was a kid so I was a little excited myself. The three-hour drive to Drumheller was beautiful on the Friday evening, but we woke up to rain on Saturday morning. Not exactly ideal for a road trip – thankfully our hotel had a continental breakfast with fruit loops so The Spaniard was all smiles after two bowls. We started our morning by driving out to the Royal Tyrrell Museum -Canada’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the science of palaeontology – where we joined a lineup of families waiting to enter the dino madness. I was …

Quick & Dirty Clothing Swap

I have a problem. I have too many clothes. I know loads of girls with a closet full of clothes and shoes, so I know I am not alone in my fashion hoarding ways, but lately I have wanted to declutter and edit my wardrobe. I blame it on my minimalistic Spanish boyfriend for making me feel bad about my clothing collection. The problem is I just can’t clean out my closet alone. I need motivation. Thankfully my friend Des who owns The Beauty Parlour was up for hosting a clothing swap. I’ve helped her organize a few swaps at her clean air salon over the years and the event has always helped me purge a few loveless items I was holding on to. I’m also a bargain hunter so the opportunity to pick up a few additions to my closet for free is right up my alley. Des came over to help me go through my closet and she was ruthless. She made me pull everything out of my closet, try it on, and after …

Late night at RGD RD

It is possible to get a table at RGD RD. Sure, if you are hoping for a 7 p.m. reservation on a Friday night you may need to book ahead, but if you open to some late night eats or a spot at the bar then a taste of RGD RD is within reach. The Spaniard and I recently took a class at Get Cooking Edmonton with Chef David Leeder, who is currently in the kitchen at RGD RD. I mentioned I was wanting to come in again, but heard reservations were hard to come by since Chef Blair Lebsack and Caitlin Fulton’s restaurant had been named one of Enroute’s 2014 Best New Restaurants in Canada annual listing. He corrected me –  options for spontaneous eaters are available. I learned RGD RD has one table and four seats at the bar that are always available for walk-ins. While the traditional Canadian dinner time is often booked up, late night dinner options are available. That Saturday I could get a table for four at 10:15 p.m. Since I …

Looking for the Oliver Turtle

Two years ago I was just a block from my apartment when I saw a man walking a giant turtle. Not one to be shy in random moments like this – I walked up and said hello. I learned that his turtle liked to go for walks (he certainly scooted along pretty quickly), and that he didn’t like when dogs came up and put their dirty noses on his shell. I’m sure he has people asking him questions every time he takes his turtle for a walk, but when I told the gentleman I had been to the Galapagos Islands he seemed excited to stop and talk to me. He even offered to let me feed his turtle some apple. I walked away having one of those – I can’t believe that just happened – moments. I saw the man a few more times that summer, but I haven’t seen him since. Now that the weather is warmer I often hope I’ll run into him when I leave my place. I’m desperately seeking the Oliver turtle.
